The Director, Safety and Athletics is accountable for the administration, oversight and planning for various core knowledge areas identified for the position. The person in this position uses management, organizational, planning, communication, technical and conflict management skills to ensure that the assigned core knowledge areas are carried out effectively to meet the goals and objectives set forth annually by the School Board and Superintendent of Schools.
This position will coordinate the Cooperative Sports Program with the Millersburg Area School District Athletic Director to assure a seamless experience for student-athletes.
Serve as the Athletic Director:
- Develop and enforce participation and eligibility rules related to extracurricular programs and student-athletes.
- Administer the district-wide athletics and extracurricular programs.
- Work with staff and site administration to develop and enforce an athletic/academic code of conduct which is consistent with the goals of the staff, administration and the district
- Ensure compliance with PIAA, District III, and league rules and regulations.
- Communicate with stakeholders of extracurricular programs.
- Manage the enrollment process for extracurricular activities.
- Manage the athletic training contract and on-site certified athletic trainer.
- Assist coaches and school nurse in scheduling athletic physicals and completion of necessary forms.
- Manage extracurricular coaches and advisors.
- Evaluate staff and implementing corrective action where needed.
- Obtain and manage event staff and officials for sporting events.
- Coordinate transportation for extracurricular events.
- Schedule and manage all competitions and PIAA, District III, and league playoff events.
- Manage the athletics budget and the purchasing of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist each varsity coach in maintaining accurate inventory of equipment and materials and file such an inventory with the principal at the conclusion of each season.
- Manage and provide adequate practice and playing facilities.
- Serve as liaison between the athletic booster groups, coaches, and both Upper Dauphin Area and Millersburg Area Administration (for cooperative sports).
- Respond to all parent and staff concerns via call or email.
- Troubleshoot the day-to-day operation of the district extracurricular program.
- Participate in league and District III meetings and hearings as necessary throughout the year.
- Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal.
Serve as the School Safety and Security Coordinator for the UDASD.
- Serve as the Incident Commander for major emergency incidents affecting the UDASD.
- Plan and execute the district-wide safety, security and emergency management program.
- Coordinate school safety and security assessments as necessary.
- Supervise and evaluate security staff and implement corrective action where needed.
- Lead the UDASD Safety Committee.
- Serve as the liaison with the UDASD Safety Committee, the department, PA State Police, local fire departments, emergency medical services, and other organizations on matters of school safety and security.
- Investigate major incidents and provide reporting to administration and school board as needed.
- Plan and execute safety and security projects.
- Ensure the timely and accurate submission of assigned state and federal reports/information.
- Communicate information with internal and external stakeholders through multiple media including websites and social media.
- Administer the drug-testing program.
- Manage procurement process for major initiatives related to safety, security, and athletics.
- Provide project management services as needed for safety, security, and athletics projects.
- Participate as availability allows in the Dauphin County Safe Schools Committee and Dauphin County Joint School Safety Task Force.
- Participate as availability allows in the UDASD Student Assistance Program Teams.
- Review the school entity’s policies and procedures relative to school safety and security and compliance with Federal and State laws regarding school safety and security.
- Coordinate training and resources for students and school entity staff in matters relating to situational awareness, trauma-informed approaches, behavioral health awareness, suicide and bullying awareness, substance abuse awareness and emergency procedures and training drills, including fire, natural disaster, active shooter, hostage situation and bomb threat.
- Make a report no later than each June 30 thereafter, to the school entity’s board of directors on the school entity’s current safety and security practices that identify strategies to improve school safety and security. The report shall be presented to the school entity’s board of directors at an executive session of the school entity’s board of directors. The report shall be submitted to the committee and shall not be subject to the act of February 14, 2008 (P.L.6, No.3), known as the Right-to-Know Law.
- Coordinate a tour of the school entity’s buildings and grounds biennially or when a building is first occupied or reconfigured with the law enforcement agencies and first responders that are primarily responsible for protecting and securing the school entity to discuss and coordinate school safety and security matters.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Certification:
Obtain School Safety and Security Coordinator certification through approved PCCD program within one year of hire.
Position does not require teaching certification.

Preferred Certifications:
- Emergency Management Institute Courses including IS-100 SCa, IS-200.b, IS-362.a, IS-700.a and IS-800.b (Must be obtained within one year of hire)
- Certified Interscholastic Coach
- Certified Athletic Administrator
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with project management, planning, and emergency management.
Experience with high school and middle school athletic administration.
Work Year:
Full-time, 245 Days based on District Schedule.
Work Schedule:
Flexible schedule to allow attendance at and management of evening and weekend school events.
Normal work hours as determined by the supervisor.
Emergency Management:
Must be available 24/7 to respond to emergency situations involving UDASD students, staff and property. Position is subject to callback due to emergency situations.
Designated member of Joint School Safety Taskforce which may include working outside normal assignments to assist member school districts.
Position will carry or be in proximity to emergency radio communications during working hours.
Job Rate:
Hiring: Salary commensurate with experience.
Ongoing: As decided annually by the School Board.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit at desk for extended periods.
- Repetitive movements of hands and fingers necessary for computer and calculator work.
- Some lifting (50 lbs.) and some carrying (25 lbs.).
- Some bending, stooping, climbing, reaching and turning/twisting.
- Writing and computer entry.
Work Environment:
Office setting as well as all indoor and outdoor school facilities.
